Artists’ Statement

My ultimate goal in most pieces is to translate images and themes from dreams I’ve experienced, for posterity. I take a decidedly hands off approach with the concepts I use in my art, trying to note dreams and similarly vague ideas down, and translate them to visual media, as accurately as possible. I work in a variety of mediums, all in service of accuracy.

Recurring themes and inspirations in my art include, in no particular order, androgyny, body horror, pre-photography medical & disease illustration, sadomasochism, and mildness and gentleness being contrasted with the aforementioned. In general I try to use soft, inoffensive shapes and colours to make heavy or dark ideas palatable.
I aim to make the figures I draw uncanny, but human- this combined with their settings in theory is dreamlike, like meeting eyes with a stranger to whom you have no relation to but feel and uncanny connection to, or like seeing something traumatic but feeling entirely detached and unmoved.
I consider myself a Lowbrow or Pop Surrealist artist, influenced by the media I grew up with-

Using bright poppy colours and a relaxed mood to offset sadness and trauma is something I believe strongly in and is the real core of my work, I think.
